Discover Islam, one question at a time
Whether you are exploring Islam for the first time, supporting a Muslim friend, or returning to your own studies, you are welcome to learn with us at the Islamic Center of Jonesboro.
Start with the essentials below, read the Quran, and reach out when you would like to talk. You do not need to be Muslim to ask questions or arrange a visit.
What is Islam?
Islam is a faith centered on worshipping one God, known in Arabic as Allah. A Muslim is someone who follows Islam and seeks to live with faith, compassion, honesty, and responsibility toward others.
Muslims believe that God sent prophets to guide humanity, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, peace be upon them. Muslims regard Muhammad as the final prophet and the Quran as God’s revelation.
What do Muslims believe?
The central beliefs of Islam include faith in:
- One God: the Creator, who is merciful and worthy of worship.
- Angels: beings created by God who carry out His commands.
- Revealed scriptures: the guidance God sent through His messengers.
- Prophets and messengers: those chosen to teach people about God.
- The Day of Judgment: accountability for our actions and life after death.
- Divine decree: God’s knowledge and authority over all things.
The five pillars of Islam
These practices help shape a Muslim’s relationship with God and the wider community.
- Shahadah — declaration of faith. Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger.
- Salah — prayer. Five daily prayers that provide regular moments of worship, reflection, and gratitude.
- Zakah — obligatory giving. Sharing a prescribed portion of eligible wealth to support those entitled to receive it.
- Sawm — fasting in Ramadan. Abstaining from food, drink, and other specified acts from dawn to sunset, with exemptions for those who qualify.
- Hajj — pilgrimage. Making the pilgrimage to Makkah once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able.
Begin with the Quran
The Quran is central to Muslim belief and worship. Our resource page includes an Arabic and English Quran PDF and a guide to memorization. An English translation can help you explore the meanings of the Arabic text.
Faith in everyday life
Islam encourages kindness to parents and neighbors, care for people in need, fairness in our dealings, and respect for the trust others place in us. Learning is an ongoing journey, and a community can help connect what we study with how we live.
